Star Formation from Turbulent Fragmentation

چکیده

Star formation is intimately linked to the dynamical evolution of molecular clouds. Turbulent fragmentation determines where and when protostellar cores form, and how they contract and grow in mass via accretion from the surrounding cloud material. Efficiency, spatial distribution and timescale of star formation in turbulent clouds are estimated by comparing numerical models of self-gravitating isothermal gas where turbulence is assumed to have decayed or is driven at supersonic speed on various wavelengths. Turbulence that is not continuously replenished or that is driven on large scales leads to a rapid formation of stars in a clustered mode, whereas interstellar turbulence that carries most energy on small scales results in isolated star formation with low efficiency. Protostellar accretion rates strongly vary in time and peak at a few 10 M⊙ yr . The clump mass spectrum for models of pure hydrodynamic turbulence is steeper than the observed one, but becomes comparable when including gravity. The mass spectrum of dense cores, on the other hand, is log-normal for decaying and large-wavelength turbulence, similar to the IMF, but is to flat in the case of small-scale turbulence.

Centrally condensed turbulent cores: Massive stars or fragmentation?

We present numerical investigations into the formation of massive stars from turbulent cores of density gradient ρ ∝ r. The results of five hydrodynamical simulations are described, following the collapse of the core, fragmentation and the formation of small clusters of protostars. We generate two different initial turbulent velocity fields corresponding to power-law spectra P ∝ k and P ∝ k, an...

Brown Dwarfs from Turbulent Fragmentation

The origin of brown dwarfs (BDs) is an important component of the theory of star formation, because BDs are approximately as numerous as solar mass stars. It has been suggested that BDs originate from the gravitational fragmentation of protostellar disks, a very different mechanism from the formation of hydrogen burning stars. We propose that BDs are instead formed by the process of turbulent f...

The Minimum Mass for Opacity-Limited Fragmentation in Turbulent Cloud Cores

We present a new analysis of the minimum mass for star formation, based on opacity-limited fragmentation. Our analysis differs from the standard one, which considers hierarchical fragmentation of a 3-D medium, and yields MMIN ∼ 0.007 to 0.010 M⊙ for Population I star formation. Instead we analyse the more realistic situation in which there is one-shot fragmentation of a shock-compressed layer, ...

Magnetic Fields in Star Formation: from Galaxies to Stars

Magnetic fields are important at every scale in the star formation process: from the dynamics of the ISM in galaxies, to the collapse of turbulent molecular clouds to form stars and in the fragmentation of individual star forming cores. The recent development of a robust algorithm for MHD in the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics method has enabled us to perform simulations of star formation inclu...

Understanding Star Formation at Early Stages in the Filamentary Era by I-jen Lee Dissertation

This thesis presents a study of star formation at early stages in the filamentary era with a special focus on massive star and cluster formation. We first investigate the importance of filamentary structures in star formation and propose an observationally driven scenario for the evolution of filamentary structures from large-scale molecular clouds to small-scale circumstellar envelopes. In add...
